GS1 UK is the UK authority on cross sector barcode and supply chain standards.
GS1 UK is part of the worldwide GS1 network. GS1 is a not-for-profit business association with over 17,000 UK members, including CodePack Solutions. GS1 UK aims to make supply chain standards and the adoption of related technology accessible and affordable for all UK companies.
GS1 UK became the new name for e.centre in February 2005. e.centre was the trading name of the Association for Standards and Practices in Electronic Trade (EAN UK Ltd) which was launched in October 1998 after the merger of the Article Number Association (ANA) * and the Electronic Commerce Association (ECA) **. It has therefore existed through its predecessor organisations for over 25 years.
GS1 UK standards allow businesses to seize opportunities in areas such as traceability, inventory management, point of sale/use and collaborative planning. Over 1,000,000 companies globally use these standards to achieve efficiencies in their business. GS1 Standards include the following four key supply chain technologies:
- Bar coding
- Electronic business messaging
- Radio frequency identification (RFID)
- Data synchronisation
* ANA - British business established the ANA in 1977 to promote the use of the EAN.UCC System. It developed the most widely used electronic data interchange (EDI) standards for trade in the UK and worked with its members and other organisations to produce standards for profitable global trading. ANA?s work provided the foundation for improved supply chain management.
** ECA - The ECA was formed by the business community in 1987, initially as the EDI Association, but later broadening its sphere of interest to incorporate the wider aspects of electronic commerce. Much of its work was conducted through a wide range of advisory groups that form an important aspect of GS1 UK's activities today.
